Charenton

As you approach Charenton from Louisiana Hwy 87 and cross the Bayou Teche Bridge you will see the display of 25 flags.  These 25 flags tell the story of the area.  One of the first flags to be recognized in this group is that of the Chitimacha Nation.  The Chitimacha Nation was the first settlement of the area.  The missionaries from Spain are recognized as the first European settlers and were followed by the Acadians from Canada.  Each flag that follows adds another important culture and tradition to Charenton.  With more than 20 different nations and cultures recognized as intricate parts of this community it is safe to say that Charenton is a true "melting pot."
